Rooted in research, Gizmos can impact best teaching practice and content pedagogy in math and science. To help build teacher and administrator awareness, short video clips were created to articulate how Gizmos can help support each component in Domains 1 – 3. The video clips offers artifacts and “look for’s” to support the component elements. In addition, the video clips are narrated and offer helpful Gizmo tips.  Available on the Hillsborough Gizmos YouTube channel, the video clips are available to math and science teachers, SAL’s and department heads, peer mentors, peer evaluators, academic coaches, and administrators to learn about a specific component chosen, or an entire domain – it’s your pick!

Are There Right & Wrong Ways of Using Gizmos?

Are There Right & Wrong Ways of Using Gizmos?

You betcha! While math and science teachers have found a variety of ways to use Gizmos in class and with their students, keep in mind best practices. Take a moment to think about the HCPS teacher evaluation framework components and also consider technology best-practices. As recommended during the initial Gizmos training and also in the advanced Gizmos training, teachers will experience the biggest "bang for the buck" using Gizmos in whole-class instruction. Consider pairing teaching strategies and techniques such as Kagan, Bloom's taxonomy higher order questiong, cooperative groups, etc. when using Gizmos during classroom instruction. To help you establish healthy uses for Gizmos, take a moment to look at the graphic organizer below:

Looking for a strategic way to use current district resources to promote highest student achievement? Pair research-based resources that have proven results to student achievement data. Remediate lower performing benchmarks using Gizmos!

Analyze district, school, or teacher data through a mini self-guided lesson on Achievement Series to access assessment data. Learn how to rank standards/benchmarks from lowest to highest performing in a matter of minutes with just a few mouse clicks. Then, correlate Gizmos to content data to create an FCIM action plan.  Consider creating Gizmos FCIM action plans for your school, grade level, course, or class periods.

Using Gizmos for Whole Class Instruction

Using Gizmos in a Whole-Class Setting

One of the questions teachers ask most often is how they can use Gizmos. As a new user to Gizmos, you may think Gizmos can only be used in a computer lab where each student is seated at a computer, or that in order to use Gizmos students must complete the Student Exploration Worksheet from beginning to end. That's not the case! Gizmos are extremely versatile.

Not only can teachers use Gizmos in a computer lab with students through a structured class activity, which should involve discussion and review/re-teach, but Gizmos can also be used in a variety of ways in a whole-class setting.  Consider using Gizmos to support your instruction:

  • Activate student's prior knowledge by using the Gizmo to explore a concept and gauge what students already know
  • Pair a Gizmo with your lesson to visually show a math or science concept
  • Select an appropriate Gizmo as a class demonstration to help students make strong connections to the content being taught
  • Perform a whole-class virtual lab to reinforce a lesson or to enrich content already taught
  • Use features of the Gizmos, such as camera snap-shots and screen shots, to create FCAT style questions, exit questions, informal assessment questions, etc.
  • Target a specific benchmark for remediation and create a CIM (continuous improvement model) with an appropriate Gizmo paired. Create bellwork questions based upon a Gizmos visual model or graph/data.
  • Select a Gizmo to help facilitate review of content previously taught or to solidify teaching. Project the Gizmo up on a whiteboard and write on it or interact with it using an interactive whiteboard.
